Pladis: A Global Snacking Giant Blending Biscuit Heritage and Chocolate Ambitions

London, United Kingdom / Istanbul, Turkey (via Yıldız Holding) – Pladis is a leading global snacking company, born of Yıldız Holding's vision of bringing iconic biscuit and confectionery brands together under a single entity. With a heritage of more than 300 years in baking and confectionery, Pladis is the proud custodian of names as famous as McVitie's, Ülker and Godiva. Its goal is to bring "happiness in every bite" to billions of consumers around the world, combining tradition, innovation and a growing international presence.

The Birth of a Snacking Giant

Pladis was officially created in 2016 by Yıldız Holding, a major Turkish conglomerate mainly active in food. The creation of Pladis aimed to consolidate and internationalise Yıldız Holding's snacking businesses by bringing together:

  • United Biscuits (United Kingdom): Acquired by Yıldız Holding in 2014. United Biscuits is home to historic and hugely popular British brands such as McVitie's (Digestives, Jaffa Cakes, Hobnobs, Penguin), Jacob's (crackers), Carr's (fine biscuits) and Go Ahead.
  • Ülker (Turkey): Yıldız Holding's flagship brand, founded in 1944, and one of the largest food and beverage brands in Turkey and the Middle East, with a vast range of biscuits, chocolates and confectionery.
  • Godiva Chocolatier (Belgium/International): The famous Belgian luxury chocolate maker, acquired by Yıldız Holding in 2008. Godiva is synonymous with premium chocolates and pralines.
  • DeMet's Candy Company (United States): Maker of popular confectionery such as Turtles® (pecan and caramel chocolates) and Flipz® (chocolate-covered pretzels).

The name "Pladis" is inspired by the Pleiades constellation, a group of stars visible from everywhere in the world, symbolising the company's global ambition. Pladis's headquarters are in London.

A Portfolio of Iconic Brands, Between Biscuits and Chocolate

Pladis manages a diverse portfolio of well-loved global and regional brands:

  • McVitie's: One of the best-selling biscuit brands in the UK and Europe, famous for its Digestives (plain or coated in milk, dark or white chocolate – a major innovation being the Homewheat Chocolate Digestive launched in 1925), its Jaffa Cakes, its Hobnobs and its Penguins.
  • Ülker: A leading brand in Turkey and the Middle East, offering a wide range of biscuits (such as Biskrem), wafers, cakes, chocolate bars and chocolates.
  • Godiva Chocolatier: A luxury chocolate brand recognised worldwide for its pralines, truffles, bars and seasonal products. Pladis recently integrated Godiva more closely into its portfolio (announced in 2024) to accelerate its growth, notably in the American and Chinese markets, and is exploring formats such as Godiva cafés (for example, the opening of a Godiva café in Dubai Mall).
  • Jacob's: A cracker and savoury biscuit brand very popular in the UK and Ireland.
  • Carr's: Known for its premium fine biscuits and crackers.
  • Flipz®: Pretzels coated in chocolate, yoghurt or other flavours.
  • Turtles®: Chocolate confectionery with pecans and caramel.
  • BN (Biscuiterie Nantaise): A French biscuit brand, notably the "BN sourires".
  • Verkade (Netherlands): A historic Dutch biscuit and chocolate brand.

Market Position and Global Scale

Pladis is one of the world's leading snacking companies, with a strong presence in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, North America and Asia. The company employs about 16,000 people and operates 27 factories in 11 countries. Its products are sold in more than 110 countries, potentially reaching four billion consumers.

Pladis group revenue exceeded £2.7 billion (about US$3.5 billion) for its financial year ended 2023. In the UK, Pladis is a biscuit market leader, with McVitie's as its flagship brand. Pladis's strategy aims to understand and capitalise on consumers' "snacking moments".

Cocoa Sourcing and Sustainability Initiatives

As a major user of cocoa, notably for Godiva and the chocolate coatings of its McVitie's biscuits, Pladis has put sustainability initiatives in place. The company's sustainability priorities include:

  • Responsible ingredient sourcing: With a particular focus on cocoa, palm oil and wheat.
  • Cocoa: Pladis aims for 100% verified deforestation-free cocoa sourcing by 2030. A significant share of its cocoa is bought via Önem, a Pladis-owned grinding plant in Turkey, which sources partly from traceable cooperatives in West Africa. Pladis also works with Fildişi, a trading company based in Côte d'Ivoire and owned by Yıldız Holding, for its supplies. The company collaborates with partners such as the Earthworm Foundation to improve traceability and sustainable practices in its cocoa supply chain, with a programme called "Beyond Cocoa".
  • Palm oil: A commitment to 100% sustainable and traceable palm oil.
  • Reducing environmental footprint: Efforts to decarbonise its operations, reduce plastic waste (with a target of reusable, recyclable or compostable plastic packaging) and manage resources sustainably.

Pladis's sustainability report (the latest available often being the 2022 one) details its progress and targets in these areas.

Recent News and Strategy (2023-2025)

  • Godiva integration: Pladis strengthened the integration of Godiva Chocolatier into its portfolio in 2024, appointing a new president for the brand and announcing ambitious plans to accelerate its sales, particularly in the United States and China, by 2026.
  • Financial performance: Pladis UK recorded double-digit growth in sales and profit in 2023, mainly thanks to price increases and cost reductions.
  • Product innovation: Launch of novelties such as the McVitie's White Chocolate Digestive (a major launch) and limited editions of Jaffa Cakes (e.g. a cola flavour).
  • Regional expansion: Opening of a new regional headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (September 2024), to oversee operations in the Middle East, North Africa and India.
  • Production network optimisation: Announcement of the closure of a production plant in Mohnton, Pennsylvania (United States) by mid-2025, as part of a streamlining of operations.
  • Leadership changes: Pladis announced changes to its global and UK leadership in March 2025, including the departure of its global CEO.

Pladis's strategy continues to focus on:

  • Growing its core brands in biscuits and confectionery.
  • Innovation to meet changing consumer tastes and snacking occasions.
  • Geographic expansion in key and emerging markets.
  • Developing the premium segment with Godiva.
  • Improving operational efficiency.

A Synergy of Legacies for a Delicious Future

Pladis embodies a unique fusion of biscuit and chocolate heritages, backed by the strength of Yıldız Holding. By building on the strength of globally recognised brands and investing in innovation and sustainability, Pladis aims to shape the future of snacking. The deeper integration of Godiva and expansion into new markets will be key things to watch in the coming years, as the company navigates a competitive and ever-changing landscape.
