Annual Cocoa Production (in Tonnes) and Its Evolution in Côte d'Ivoire

Notes and Data Sources (to put the figures above in context):

  • The figures for the crop years from 2014/2015 to 2022/2023 are largely based on data published by the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) in its Quarterly Bulletins of Cocoa Statistics. These figures are generally regarded as the reference. For example, the ICCO reported production of 2.248 million tonnes for 2020/2021 and 2.289 million tonnes for 2022/2023.
  • The figure for the 2023/2024* crop year (estimated at 1.760 million tonnes) is an estimate reflecting a significant drop in production due to unfavourable weather (heavy rains followed by drought) and the spread of diseases such as swollen shoot. Various sources, including USDA reports and early- and mid-2025 market analyses, converge on a markedly lower output for this crop year. In its February 2025 forecasts, the ICCO put the world deficit for 2023/2024 at 462,000 tonnes, largely because of poor harvests in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana.
  • The figure for the 2024/2025** crop year (estimated at 1.800 million tonnes) is a very preliminary forecast (for example, the USDA FAS forecast of March 2025). It suggests a slight improvement on 2023/2024, but remains below the production levels of previous years. These forecasts depend heavily on upcoming weather conditions and on the measures taken to fight disease. The Coffee-Cocoa Council has resumed the distribution of improved seedlings for this crop year.
