Cocoa Farming in Cameroon

Cameroon, a Central African country, is not a big cocoa producer on the scale of Côte d'Ivoire or Ghana. However, the country has managed to establish a not insignificant cocoa industry. Indeed, Cameroon ranks third among African cocoa producers and fifth worldwide behind Indonesia and Ecuador (2022 figures).

Cocoa growing was introduced to Cameroon in the late 19th century by German colonists. After the First World War, the French continued to develop the crop, making Cameroon one of the main cocoa exporters in Africa. Today, cocoa growing is a pillar of Cameroon's rural economy.

The main cocoa-producing regions in Cameroon are the Centre, the South, the Littoral and the South-West. These regions enjoy a tropical climate and fertile soil, ideal for growing cocoa.

Cameroonian cocoa producers face several challenges:

  • Climate change: Climate variations affect yields and cocoa quality.
  • Diseases and pests: Cocoa trees are vulnerable to diseases such as black pod rot and insect attacks.
  • Price fluctuations: World cocoa prices can be unstable, affecting farmers' incomes.
  • Limited access to resources: Many farmers have limited access to financing, modern technology and training.

Despite these challenges, there are opportunities to improve cocoa growing in Cameroon:

  • Training programmes: Government and non-government initiatives provide training in best farming practices.
  • Access to financing: Microfinance programmes help farmers invest in improved technologies and inputs.
  • Certifications: Certifications such as fair trade and organic farming can offer price premiums and new markets.
  • Local processing: Encouraging on-site processing of cocoa can add value and create local jobs.

Cocoa growing is a major source of income for hundreds of thousands of families in Cameroon. It also contributes to the country's export earnings. Moreover, initiatives aimed at improving the sustainability of cocoa production can have positive effects on rural communities and the environment.

Cocoa growing in Cameroon is a vital agricultural activity with significant growth potential. Although they face challenges, cocoa producers and sector stakeholders continue to work together to overcome these obstacles and maximise opportunities. With improved farming practices, increased support and local processing, cocoa growing can continue to thrive and contribute to Cameroon's economic and social development.
