Tetteh Quarshie: The Man Who Introduced Cocoa Farming to Ghana

Cocoa is today one of Ghana's main crops, making the country one of the world's largest cocoa producers. The introduction of the crop to Ghana is often credited to a visionary businessman, Tetteh Quarshie.

Tetteh Quarshie, born in 1842 in Teshie, a town near Accra, was a Ghanaian blacksmith. In 1870, Quarshie travelled to Fernando Po (now Bioko in Equatorial Guinea), where he discovered cocoa farming. Impressed by the plant, he decided to bring some cocoa beans back to Ghana.

In 1879, Tetteh Quarshie returned to Ghana with cocoa seeds, which he planted on his farm at Mampong, in the Akwapim region. The cocoa plants thrived in Ghana's tropical climate, and Quarshie's plantation quickly became a success.

The success of Tetteh Quarshie's plantation encouraged other farmers to take up cocoa growing. Cocoa spread rapidly to other regions of Ghana through the distribution of seeds and the sharing of growing techniques. By the early 20th century, cocoa had become a dominant crop in the country, transforming Ghana's agricultural economy.

The introduction of cocoa had a significant impact on Ghanaian economy and society:

  • Economic: Cocoa became Ghana's main source of export revenue, boosting the economy and enabling the development of rural infrastructure.
  • Social: Cocoa farming improved the livelihoods of many farmers and their families, helping to reduce poverty in rural areas.
